Making small or significant changes can be challenging. Deciding to start therapy means you’re taking a step toward change.

It is common to fear that things will remain the same when your life is hard. And you can also fear letting go of the familiar as you learn new ways to better deal with the problems.

Therapy can help you better understand yourself, what motivates you, and what you really need.

I am here to help you identify the obstacles in your life and overcome them. In therapy, you define your vision of where you want to be. And it enables you to make the necessary changes to make that vision a reality.

Mental health issues can be challenging to overcome alone. I am here to walk alongside you in that process of self-knowledge and growth.

I have experience with individuals with persistent suicidal thoughts, self-harm thoughts and behaviours, depression, anxiety, and trauma. I work with youth and adults.

In those first few sessions, we will better understand your goals and expectations. And I will use the skills and techniques I believe will be the most helpful for you.

I understand how mental health issues can be challenging to overcome, and I am here to walk alongside you to find meaning and healing.

I am doing my Master’s in Social Work at the University of Manitoba. And I have a background in psychology. In addition, my training and career have been focused on the Mental Health field, which is a huge passion of mine.

I am a lifelong learner and helper who genuinely cares about other people. I want you to succeed and live “the good life”. I am a proponent of Humanistic, Cognitive-Behavioural, and Solution-Focused methodologies. I am also a strong advocate of positive psychological approaches.

I believe living well requires more than just fixing your problems. It is equally important for you to appreciate what is going well in your life. This means recognizing and finding new ways to capitalize on your strengths and personal resources in new ways that contribute to your overall well-being and happiness.

Over the years, I have worked with older youth and adults who are experiencing challenges including anxiety, depression, life transitions, LGBTQ2S+ and coming out, relationship difficulties, self-defeating behaviours, grief and loss, stress and burn out, low self-esteem, and self-advocacy. Also, I’ve spent many years counselling and supporting people with disabilities, including physical, intellectual, learning, and developmental, and with multiple disabilities.

As a therapist, I seek to gain a complete understanding of who you are and how the challenges you experience impact your life. As we continue to explore various topics, I will work with you to help you to understand how it all fits together and how your thoughts, actions, and even your body’s natural response to situations may be getting in the way of what you hope to achieve. I will then work with you to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your unique situation.

I also believe that living the good life means that we build in time for ourselves – to focus on self-care, stress reduction, and relaxation. I am passionate about self-care and highly knowledgeable in a variety of stress reduction and relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, inter-nostril breathing, and diaphragmatic breathing.

Children and teens can feel the pressures of life and it’s not easy to know how to deal with it. And it’s not always easy to know exactly what the problem is or how to let other know what it is.

As a parent that can be really challenging with no shortage of worry. Sometimes it’s so hard to understand why why your child is feel down, getting upset or acting out. I understand that, I’m as therapist who works with children and teens, and I can help you and your child figure things out.

If your child is having a really hard time, I provide them with a safe space where they don’t feel judged. And your child, whether angry, shut down or anxious, they need to know that I’m going to be warm, caring and accepting of them—no matter what.

We don’t sit down and discuss issues like adults do, I use an age appropriate therapy style that fits with where your child is at. That supportive space allows your child to feel safe enough to express what is bothering them. Whether it’s talking, drawing, or using props I use an approach that makes sense to them.

I have experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults. and I utilize approaches such as Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Person-Centred, and Narrative Therapy.

Yes, I love working with young people. But I also have experience supporting a broad range of clients, made up of various age groups, backgrounds, and presenting concerns. And I’ve been helping others for some time now. I started volunteering at the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba when I was 22 years old, and it was then that I discovered that I wanted to assist others, creating an affirming environment that encourages positive change.

I understand how difficult entering therapy can be. Having been through counselling before, I bet you might feel anxiety, hesitation, or even fear. And you might be wondering, ‘can therapy work for me?’ That’s ok, too. I try to make coming to therapy as easy for you as possible.

I believe in building a trusting and safe therapeutic space. Whether you’re trying to find balance and connection in your relationship with yourself, your partner, or others, we can work together to help you get there. This allows us to start working on the problems right away. That way, you can move forward and thrive.

I’ve supported couples and individuals with some serious struggles, and I’ve witnessed many success stories. I provide marital or relationship counselling and individual counselling. And I work with trauma, anxiety, depression, marital and relationship conflicts, addictions, and self-esteem problems.

My approach is collaborative, we work as equals, and I see you as the expert of your life. That means I’m client-centred, meaning we start where you are with what you need. And as a humanist, I believe in your intrinsic nature to be able to heal and grow.

I have training in several therapeutic methods, and part of my role is to find what works best for you. We’ll work together to figure that out. With cognitive behavioural therapy, we look at identifying unhelpful or self-defeating thoughts and behaviours. And we work on finding more helpful ways of thinking and acting. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy focuses on mindfulness and meditation, and acceptance of ourselves. Solution-focused therapy is good when there is one particular issue to be addressed. But we may also do some family of origin work, looking at your family structure and your place in it. Part of my job is to find out what method or methods work best for you to create an individualized plan that best reflects your unique needs.

Helping children and youth heal and grow is what I love to do. I have experience working with a range of mental health and trauma-related issues. I’ve worked with children and youth who have gone through neglect physical, emotional and sexual abuse. I have also worked with children and youth diagnosed with ADHD, PTSD, attachment disorder, depression, anxiety, and global developmental delay. I have experience helping children, youth and families with daily life matters and skills-building to crisis situations.

In some cultures, including mine, seeking help through therapy and counselling is considered a taboo, unnecessary or a weakness. If this is where you are coming from, let us break that stigma together. It is okay to ask for help. I will provide a safe and culturally sensitive space for you to be your true self. You don’t have to go through challenging moments alone. I am here to help.

I also work with New Canadians who have unique pressures. People of all ages from different cultural backgrounds often face many uncertainties and pressures while adjusting to Canada. This could lead to isolation and an overall decline in their mental health and well-being. As I have seen this happening over the years in my own Filipino community, I know that this is especially true for children and youth immigrants, who, in addition may be experiencing conflicts with parents or relatives due to differences in cultural practices. Or vice versa, parents may find it challenging to raise their children and some relationships are broken.

My family moved from the Philippines when I was 15 years old. I grew up being exposed to Filipino norms and values. Still, I am also fortunate enough to be able to adopt our diverse culture here in Canada. I consider myself privileged for having a dual cultural background. I see it as an opportunity to bridge the gap between older and younger generations of immigrants in our community.

I completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Interdisciplinary Health (formerly Human Ecology) in 2020 and a Bachelor of Social Work in 2022.

As a Christian, I also aim to provide counselling using Biblical principles to folks who prefer to work with someone with the same spiritual beliefs or values.

If you are overwhelmed by our intake form, please do not let this hinder you from getting help. You can fill out only what you can, or please do not hesitate to contact me or Mercedes so we can work on filling it out together.

Our sessions can be in English or Tagalog.

I’m looking forward to working with you.
